Q-final: Kuwait SC hold off late Al Shabab surge to advance

Bishkek: Kuwait SC had to stave off a late fightback to earn a 5-3 win against Oman’s Al Shabab Club in their AFC Challenge League 2025/26™ quarter-final at Dolen Omurzakov Stadium on Sunday.
The Kuwaiti side’s opponents in Wednesday’s semi-final will be either Lebanon’s Al Ansar FC or FC Muras United of Kyrgyz Republic, who meet later on Sunday. The first chance went Kuwait SC’s way in the 10th minute when a poor clearance saw the ball go loose inside Al Shabab’s box but Mohammad Daham’s low shot was well blocked by Yaqdhan Al Mushaifri. Kuwait SC found the breakthrough in the 34th minute under fortunate circumstances when Mohamed Marhoon broke through on the right flank, with his cross diverted into his own net by Halidi Lwaliwa. The Kuwaiti side extended their lead five minutes later through another move from the right flank, this time Daham beat two markers before threading the ball to Yassine Khenissi who smashed home on the turn.

Al Shabab could have pulled a goal back in added time after Kenean Maleko found Hatem Al Rushadi, only for the latter to skew his effort wide from close range. There was no letting up from Kuwait SC after the interval as they made it 3-0 in the 48th minute as Daham completed a surging run by picking out Amoory, who curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box. Al Shabab had no answers to Kuwait SC’s dominance, conceding another from a similar position in the 63rd minute with Amoory turning provider to set up Marhoon for a fantastic volley that had goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini grasping at thin air.

The Oman side, however, gave themselves hope with Mohammed Al Ghafri nodding in Yousuf Al Malki’s cross in the 72nd minute before Maleko drove into the box three minutes to fire home from an acute angle. Amazingly, Al Shabab moved within one in the 88th minute when slack defending from Kuwait SC saw them lose possession at the edge of their box with the ball being fed to Maleko, who curled beautifully past Khaled Al Rashidi.

The tie was eventually settled right on the stroke of the 90th minute mark with Kuwait SC breaking on the counter with Faisal Al Harbi applying the finish to take the three-time AFC Cup™ winners through.
