Marinos’ Nagato out to make up for 2024 disappointment

AIPS ASIA News:

Jeddah: Katsuya Nagato has set himself the target of erasing last year’s heartbreak by helping Yokohama F. Marinos win their AFC Champions League Elite™ Finals Jeddah 2025 quarter-final tie against Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr Club on Saturday.

Nagato started both legs of the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 final against Al Ain FC which the Emirati side won 6-3 on aggregate, and the left-back understandably wants a happier outcome at Jeddah 2025.
“There’s definitely (a big motivation because of the final last year), I was so disappointed about the last final,” said Nagato.
“Now the format is different. The most important thing about tomorrow’s game is that we are here to win the tournament.”
The 30-year-old, while respectful of Al Nassr’s star-studded squad, is adamant that Marinos will approach the match with no fear.
“We’re very happy to be here. We feel the confidence to play and we are looking forward to the game.
“As players, we respect our opponents. Tomorrow on the field, it’s 11v11 and that’s the start. There’s nothing to be afraid of and tomorrow we can show who we are on the field.”
Formerly with Vegalta Sendai and Kashima Antlers, Nagato has started six matches for Marinos in their continental campaign, helping the team to four clean sheets.
Domestically, however, Marinos are rooted at the bottom of J League 1 and the AFC Champions League Elite could well be the springboard for Marinos to stage their recovery.
“In the local league, we are not in a great condition but the group is motivated and we are ready to win.”
