QF Preview: Uzbekistan primed for France showdown

Surakarta: Uzbekistan will be looking to extend their stay in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023 when they take on France in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Having sent England packing in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, Jamoliddin Rakhmatullaev’s side will be brimming with confidence as they seek a place in the last four for the first time.

Drawn in Group B, the Central Asian side started their campaign on a low, suffering a 2-0 defeat against fellow quarter-finalists Mali.
However, a 3-0 win over Canada turned their fortunes around before a 2-2 draw with Spain in their final group game enabled them to progress as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Forward Amir Saidov has been at the thrust of Uzbekistan’s campaign, grabbing a brace against Canada, scoring the vital equaliser versus Spain and following up with the opener in the 2-1 win over England.
Behind him is the inspirational Lazizbek Mirzaev, who produced the brilliant free-kick that knocked England out and the team captain is not hiding their ambition on what Uzbekistan want to achieve in the tournament.
“We want to be champions. We are playing for our people, for all of Uzbekistan,” said Mirzaev.
“It gives us real motivation. We love representing our nation and we will do everything to become champions here. We gave our maximum against England and that’s what we’ll do again in the next stage.”

It promises to be a cracking affair against a French side who have been simply sensational thus far.
Three wins out of three in Group E with seven goals scored and none conceded, France showed character in their 5-3 penalty shootout win over Senegal in their quarter-final.
Joan Tincres, who plays his club football with French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, will be France’s  main threat with the player having scored three goals thus far.
