Syria engrossed on creating history

Kuala Lumpur: Syria will have to be at their best if they are to advance to the AFC Asian Cup™ knockout stage for the first time.
Drawn in Group B alongside 2015 champions Australia, Uzbekistan and India, Hector Cuper’s side know they have to hit the ground running to stand a chance of progression.

Factfile

FIFA World Ranking: 92
Previous Appearances: 6
Best Finish: Group Stage
2019 Result: Group Stage
Head Coach: Hector Cuper (ARG)
Fun Fact: The closest Syria have come to qualifying for the knockout rounds was in 1980 and 1996 – when they finished third in their group
Group favourites Australia will be familiar foes, with the two teams having met at the same stage four years ago with the Socceroos carving out a 3-2 win.

Uzbekistan and India, meanwhile, will also be worthy opposition with both teams also targetting extended runs at Qatar 2023.

Head coach Cuper, however, is a wily tactician and will be confident of taking his team to the knockout stage for the first time.

The Argentinian has quality at his disposal, with the likes of captain Omar Al Soma and Omar Khribin leading the charge.

Syria’s Group B fixtures
