Turkmenistan, an important country in Central Asia, has earned global recognition over the past decade due to the government’s strong commitment to sports development. Following the successful preparations for the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, the country has hosted several international sporting events. Former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow played a significant role in promoting sports, and his son, the current President Serdar Berdimuhamedow, continues this positive and constructive approach.

Recently, a match of the AFC Champions League Two was played at the Ashgabat Olympic Stadium between Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr FC and Turkmenistan’s Arkadag FC. There was great excitement across Turkmenistan as fans expected Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to feature in the match. However, he did not participate. The Al Nassr coach clarified that Ronaldo did not refuse to play; rather, the management decided to rest him due to a busy schedule. He dismissed rumors suggesting otherwise.

The stadium was packed on match day. From the outset, Al Nassr adopted an attacking approach and maintained ball possession, while Arkadag relied on organized defense and swift counterattacks. The decisive goal came in the 19th minute when striker Abdullah Al Hamdan finished brilliantly after receiving a fine assist from Brazilian winger Ângelo Gabriel.

After taking the lead, Al Nassr strengthened their defense, while Arkadag applied intense pressure in search of an equalizer. Despite several dangerous attacks in the second half, the home side failed to score due to Al Nassr’s solid defensive performance and excellent goalkeeping.

In the post-match press conference, Al Nassr head coach Jorge Jesus described it as a tough contest, especially on the opponent’s home ground. He praised his team’s discipline and ability to capitalize on limited chances. Arkadag head coach Mergen Orazov commended his players’ fighting spirit, particularly in the second half, though he expressed reservations about certain refereeing decisions. With this victory, Al Nassr gained the upper hand in the tie, and attention now shifts to the return leg in Riyadh. The match in Ashgabat reflected the competitive spirit of the AFC Champions League Two and provided football fans with a memorable experience.

Modern educational institutions, technical training programs, and digital initiatives have created new opportunities for youth. In healthcare, advanced hospitals and diagnostic centers provide improved services to citizens.

Turkmenistan has strengthened its presence in international sports by hosting global events, constructing modern stadiums, and encouraging young athletes. Football, equestrian sports, and martial arts are particularly prominent. The country’s policy of permanent neutrality, recognized by the United Nations, enables it to promote peace, diplomacy, and economic cooperation while remaining free from regional conflicts. Overall, Turkmenistan today stands as a peaceful, stable, and progressively developing nation, with expectations of continued positive growth in the future.

Excellent Arrangements for Sports Journalists

When Turkmenistan hosted the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, organizers also held an International Sports Media Forum, inviting journalists from around the world. Similarly, for this AFC Champions League Two match, sports journalists from various countries arrived in Ashgabat for coverage.

The organizers’ hospitality and arrangements left a strong impression. Journalists were not only facilitated in their professional duties but were also taken on sightseeing tours to witness Turkmenistan’s development. They visited the grand statue of the country’s renowned poet, explored the world’s largest handmade carpet displayed at the National Museum, and attended a spectacular horse circus performance featuring remarkable equestrian skills that amazed the audience.
