A 5-0 for the history books: Impressive Denmark unleash full attacking power against Montenegro
BUCHAREST, June 16, 2025 – The Danish U19 team makes history by claiming their first-ever victory in the final tournament of a U19 European Championship. On Matchday 2 of Group A, head coach Lars Stensgaard’s team confidently defeated the U19 selection of Montenegro 5-0.
Compared to the opening match against Spain, Denmark made five changes to their starting lineup – including in goal, where Lucas Martin Nygaard replaced Oscar Goldberg Buur.
EARLY SUCCESS Denmark dictated the tempo of the match from the very beginning and converted their first chance just eight minutes in. Villum Berthelsen carried the ball through midfield and fired a shot from just outside the penalty area. His powerful right-footed strike found the bottom left corner. The midfielder was one of the positive additions to the starting eleven.
Shortly after, the Danish fans were nearly celebrating again, as Frederik Emmery took a shot from the left side of the box, but his effort only hit the side netting.
DENMARK CONTROLS Denmark continued to control the game, creating more chances and forcing Montenegro’s goalkeeper Ognjen Milovic into a great save in the 20th minute. He first parried a shot from Mike Themsen and quickly got back up to deny the rebound from Emmery.
Around ten minutes later, the 2-0 finally came. Denmark’s high pressing paid off as Oscar Schwartau won the ball just outside the box. He found himself one-on-one with Milovic and could have taken the shot himself, but opted to pass to teammate Themsen, who tapped the ball in.
Just before halftime, Montenegro had their first shot on goal, but Andrej Camaj’s effort flew well over the crossbar.
MORE GOALS TO COME. Denmark maintained their intensity in the second half. Just over 50 minutes in, Themsen – wearing number 10 – scored again. He was played in on the left side of the penalty area, beat a defender, and finished confidently with his right foot into the far corner.
Shortly after, Montenegro had a great chance to pull one back. Once again, it was Camaj with a powerful long-range shot, this time rattling the crossbar. Denmark responded immediately, scoring a fourth goal through substitute Jonathan Agyekum. It was almost a copy of the 2-0, once again with Themsen providing the assist. Agyekum then completed his brace a few minutes later, curling the ball beautifully into the top right corner to make it 5-0.
STREAK CONTINUES With this convincing win, Denmark now has their first three points of the tournament and keeps their hopes for the semifinals alive. The 5-0 win is also the third big victory in a row for a Danish U19 team against Montenegro. In their last meeting three years ago during the U19 European Championship qualifiers, Denmark won 6-1. In the Elite Round for the 2016 tournament, they even secured a 7-1 victory.
